Gray Reef Flush in March is one of those windows that doesn’t come with a calendar reminder—just opportunity. As winter loosens its grip, scheduled dam releases (“the flush”) move accumulated sediment and wake the river up. That surge of cold, oxygenated water dislodges midges, worms, scuds, and nymphs, creating a concentrated food conveyor belt that big trout simply don’t ignore. March weather can be fickle, but when the river bumps up, the fishing often turns honest and aggressive.
Expect subsurface tactics, thoughtful weight, and patience over perfection—this isn’t about matching a hatch, it’s about understanding movement, timing, and trout behavior during change. Keep an eye on announcements, keep your nymph box stocked, and be ready to fish when Gray Reef decides to show off why March flushes are legendary.
